What is HPV?

HPV is a common sexually transmitted disease (STI). HPV is the term used for a group of common STIs. There are 150 strains of HPV with 40 affecting the genital area. Of the 150 only 12 strains are high risk. These high risk strains can lead to genital warts and can also lead to cancer, although this is rare. HPV is contracted through vaginal, anal and oral sex. Most patients do not know they have HPV, as it typically goes away on its own without medical intervention.

HPV is one of the most common infections which therefore makes it common worldwide. However some regions have a higher rate due to lack of vaccinations and screenings. More at risk areas are Africa, South and South East Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin and Central America. It is also important to note that around 80% of sexually active people will contract HPV at some point.

How to prevent HPV?

Preventing HPV can be done by vaccination, practicing safe sex and getting regular screenings. Vaccination is the most effective way of preventing HPV. The vaccine is given at ages 12-13 and is recommended to people who are at higher risk of contracting the infection. Practicing safe sex is also a good preventive measure, this can be done by using protection such as condoms and also by limiting sexual partners. Getting regular screenings is also a good preventive measure this is to know you have the infection and also to prevent it from leading to worser diseases. Screenings can include STD/I tests, PAP smears and HPV tests for women.

Are there side effects of the HPV vaccine?

Yes, the HPV vaccine can have side effects, but they are generally mild and temporary. The benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks, as it helps prevent cervical, throat, and other HPV-related cancers. Common side effects include; Nausea, mild fever, muscle and joint pain and headaches. Some rarer side effects include; allergic reactions if you are allergic to any component of the vaccine and fainting.

If you experience these or any other side effects after taking the vaccine you should report it to your GP even if you are not certain that the vaccine caused it.
