What is Japanese Encephalitis?

Japanese Encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes, there’s no cure for this disease found across South East Asia, Japan, and tropical regions of Australia. The disease is endemic in rural and agricultural areas where the mosquito vectors thrive. In addition to its continuous presence in endemic regions, JE can also cause occasional epidemics. For example, China and India have experienced significant outbreaks, often associated with the rainy season when mosquito populations surge.

How to prevent Japanese Encephalitis

The combatting of JE relies heavily on vaccination as it is the most effective method of prevention. Vaccination is the most effective preventive strategy. It is recommended for individuals living in or traveling to endemic areas, particularly during the transmission season between May and October. Additionally, mosquito control efforts are crucial and include implementing personal protective measures such as using insect repellent, sleeping under bed nets, and wearing long-sleeved clothing

Are there side effects to the Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination?

Some very common side effects of the JE vaccine are headaches, myalgia and pain at the site of injection. Less common side effects Nausea, flu like symptoms and injection site reactions i.e. redness, itching. Uncommon side effects include: dizziness or migraines, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, musculoskeletal stiffness and arthralgia. Consult your GP if injection site reaction is severe, fever > 38°C or if any other serious symptoms occur even if you believe it is not caused by the vaccine.
